Sometimes the best way to know what’s in your products is to make them yourself! Here are some of our favorite DIY facial masks. Even though these recipes utilize simple ingredients usually found in your kitchen, it is best to use a small amount and test your skin for a reaction before going for the full on mask. For each recipe, let the ingredients warm to room temperature, and mix thoroughly before applying. Wash hands well, apply to clean skin only, and remove gently with a warm, wet washcloth. Use fresh, do not store extra.
Honey and Yogurt Mask
Ingredients:
½ cup of plain full fat Greek Yogurt
2 tablespoons of raw honey
Apply, and leave on for 20 minutes. The lactic acid in this mask will naturally peel away dead cells and the honey will draw moisture into the skin while protecting it from bacterial growth.
Flaxseed Mask
Ingredients:
½ cup of plain full fat Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon of raw honey
1 tablespoon of ground flax seed meal
In addition to the benefits listed above, adding the ground flaxseed meal acts as a physical exfoliant and gently lifts away dead skin cells.
Lemon and Oatmeal Mask
Ingredients:
½ cup of uncooked rolled oats
4 tablespoons of lemon juice
(Honey is optional and helps tighten oily skin)
Apply to skin and leave for about five to 10 minutes. Oats will soften and moisturize your skin, and can help normalize your skin’s pH. Lemon will tighten and tone and will reduce the appearance of your pores to prevent a build up of dirt and oil. Lemon is also a brightening agent for pigmentation and acne scars.
Nutmeg and Milk Exfoliating Mask
Ingredients:
½ tablespoon of ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon of whole milk
Massage the mixture into your face in small circles. Leave the mask on for five to 10 minutes. Nutmeg has natural antibacterial and calming properties so it’s good for healing sensitivity. Whole milk offers natural exfoliating, hydrating and soothing properties.
