Do you use a rotating facial brush? While these tools certainly have their advocates, there are important considerations to keep in mind. Most rotating facial cleansing brushes primarily function as exfoliating instruments. Their bristles physically sweep away dead skin cells, facilitating both exfoliation and the removal of dirt and makeup (cleansing). While a clean complexion is undoubtedly beneficial, it’s crucial to recognize that healthy skin relies on a balance of natural oils and beneficial bacteria to thrive. Regular use of these brushes can strip the skin of its essential oils and protective barrier, potentially leading to long-term skin damage.

So, why is exfoliation important? Your skin naturally exfoliates by generating new skin cells and shedding older ones. However, as we age, this cellular turnover slows down, making it advantageous to introduce a little external exfoliation. Engaging in exfoliation can boost cell turnover and stimulate the production of fresh cells, resulting in a more vibrant and youthful appearance. Exfoliation can take many forms, including rotating cleansing brushes, loofahs, dry brushing, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

Yet, it’s important to remember that excessive exfoliation can lead to dryness, ongoing inflammation, and discoloration of the skin. Any form of exfoliation can compromise the skin barrier, causing moisture loss and heightened sensitivity. Therefore, it’s essential to follow up with a good moisturizer and apply sunscreen, as your skin becomes more vulnerable to sun damage after exfoliation. In fact, exfoliation can increase sun sensitivity by as much as 45%! If you anticipate extended sun exposure or experience a higher level of incidental sun exposure during the summer months, consider adjusting your exfoliation routine accordingly.
